Choose Yerba Maté if you enjoy a bold, earthy drink and the social ritual of repeated infusions; choose green tea if you prefer a lighter cup with tea catechins and naturally occurring L-theanine. Both contain caffeine, and neither has one fixed caffeine value. Leaf amount, water temperature, steeping time and—especially for Maté—repeated refills can change total intake substantially.

Which has more caffeine?
There is too much variation for an honest universal winner. A single lightly brewed green tea may contain less caffeine than a strong Maté, but a small Maté serving is not directly comparable with a gourd that is refilled many times. Bottled drinks and concentrated extracts are different again.
Count the entire drinking session, not only the first pour. If you are sensitive to caffeine, have anxiety, palpitations, reflux, uncontrolled blood pressure or sleep difficulty, start with a modest preparation and avoid combining it with energy drinks or stimulant supplements.
Our Yerba Maté versus coffee comparison explains cumulative caffeine from refills, while the Maté versus matcha guide covers powdered tea.
Do they feel different?
Some drinkers describe green tea as a gentler form of alertness and Maté as fuller or more energising. That experience is not a guaranteed property of every cup. Green tea naturally contains L-theanine, while Maté contains other methylxanthines and polyphenols. Expectation, dose, food, sleep and tolerance also shape how a caffeinated drink feels.
Which has more antioxidants?
Both contain diverse polyphenols, but “antioxidant” is not a single substance and laboratory antioxidant measurements do not directly predict a health outcome. Green tea is known for catechins; Yerba Maté contains chlorogenic acids and other compounds. A comparison should not reduce either plant to one marketing number.
Preparation and flavour
Green tea is often steeped for a shorter time at less-than-boiling temperature to limit bitterness. Yerba Maté may be brewed as a cup, cold as tereré, or prepared traditionally in a gourd. Very hot beverages can injure the mouth and oesophagus, so let either drink cool to a comfortable temperature.

Which should you buy?
- Choose loose-leaf Maté for a bold, refillable ritual.
- Choose Maté tea bags for simpler portion control.
- Choose green tea for a lighter cup and traditional tea profile.
- For either, prefer a clear botanical identity, fresh packaging and brewing instructions.
- Avoid exaggerated detox, weight-loss or disease claims.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drink Yerba Maté and green tea on the same day?
Many adults can, but add the caffeine from both drinks, coffee, chocolate, pre-workouts and medicines. Your comfortable limit may be below population-level guidance.
Which is better before exercise?
Either can provide caffeine, but the effective amount is inconsistent in home-brewed drinks. Do not introduce a strong unfamiliar brew immediately before an event.
Which is better for weight loss?
Neither should be presented as a weight-loss treatment. Unsweetened tea may replace a higher-kilojoule drink, but sustainable weight management depends on the broader pattern.
Is green tea extract the same as brewed green tea?
No. Concentrated extracts can deliver very different amounts and carry different safety considerations. Compare drinks with drinks, not with capsules.
