A traditional gourd and bombilla turn Yerba Maté into more than a cup of tea, but the equipment needs routine care. Damp leaves left in a warm container can create musty odours and microbial growth. The right method depends on whether your gourd is natural calabash, wood, ceramic, glass or stainless steel.
Know your gourd material
Natural calabash
Calabash absorbs moisture and flavour. It benefits from gentle cleaning and thorough drying. Darkening of the inner surface can be normal staining, but fuzzy growth, a rotten smell or a soft damaged area is not.
Wood
Wooden gourds can crack if soaked for long periods or exposed to sudden temperature changes. Rinse promptly, wipe gently and allow air to circulate. Follow the maker’s instructions if the wood has a special finish.
Ceramic, glass and stainless steel
These non-porous options are generally easier to clean. Many can be washed with mild dish soap, but check whether decorative finishes or insulated construction require hand washing.
Daily cleaning after Maté
- Remove the used leaves soon after drinking.
- Rinse the gourd with warm water. Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive brush if appropriate for the material.
- Do not leave a natural or wooden gourd soaking.
- Shake out excess water.
- Dry the gourd upside down at an angle so air can move through it, then store it fully dry and uncovered.
A closed cupboard is suitable only after the gourd is completely dry. Sealing residual moisture inside encourages odour and growth.
How to clean the bombilla
Rinse the bombilla immediately after use and flush water through the filter. Use a narrow straw or bombilla brush to dislodge fine leaves. If the bombilla is designed to separate, open it carefully and clean each part before reassembly.
For stainless steel, periodic washing in hot water with mild dish soap is usually appropriate. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive powders, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for plated or decorative metals.
Does a new natural gourd need seasoning?
Some natural calabash gourds are traditionally cured or seasoned before regular use. Instructions differ: many involve moistening the interior, allowing Maté leaves to sit for a limited period and gently scraping loose plant material. Follow the seller’s method rather than leaving a wet gourd unattended for several days.
Ceramic, glass and stainless-steel gourds do not need seasoning.
Staining or mould?
Green, brown or black staining can develop as a natural gourd absorbs tea. Staining is usually flat and has no unpleasant odour. Mould is more likely to appear fuzzy or raised and may smell musty.
If you are uncertain, stop using the gourd. A badly affected, cracked or persistently musty natural gourd is safer to replace than to keep treating with improvised chemicals.
Sharing Maté more hygienically
Sharing is an important part of Maté culture, but a communal bombilla also shares saliva. During respiratory illness, cold-sore outbreaks or when someone is immunocompromised, provide separate bombillas or individual cups. Wash equipment between different groups.

Frequently asked questions
Can a wooden gourd go in the dishwasher?
Usually not. Heat, prolonged water exposure and detergent can damage wood. Check the maker’s care instructions.
Why is my bombilla blocked?
Very fine leaves or stirring can pack the filter. Insert the bombilla after arranging and moistening the leaves, then avoid moving it unnecessarily.
Should I store leaves in the gourd?
No. Store loose Yerba Maté in an airtight food-safe container away from heat, light and moisture.
