In homeopathy, 6C, 30C and 200C describe repeated steps on the centesimal dilution scale. At each C step, one part of the preceding preparation is diluted in 99 parts of diluent and shaken according to the homeopathic method. A larger C number is therefore more dilute in ordinary chemical termsโnot a higher concentration of the original substance.
What the letter C means
C stands for the centesimal, or 1-in-100, scale. The arithmetic is:
- 1C: one 1:100 dilution step;
- 6C: six repeated 1:100 steps, an overall theoretical dilution of 10โ12;
- 30C: thirty steps, an overall theoretical dilution of 10โ60;
- 200C: two hundred steps, an overall theoretical dilution of 10โ400.
Homeopathic preparation also includes succussionโvigorous shakingโbetween steps. Insoluble starting materials may first undergo trituration, or grinding with lactose.
Why โhigher potencyโ can be confusing
Homeopathic practitioners use the word โpotencyโ according to their own therapeutic system: a 200C is called a higher potency than a 30C. In chemistry, however, 200C is vastly more dilute. The term should not be read as โmore milligramsโ, โstronger concentrationโ or proof of a stronger clinical effect.
At sufficiently high dilutions, the likelihood of even one molecule of the original substance remaining becomes extremely low. This is one reason homeopathyโs proposed mechanisms and clinical effects remain scientifically disputed. A clear article should distinguish the homeopathic convention from established chemistry rather than blending the two.
What about X, D and LM labels?
X or D usually indicates a decimal 1-in-10 series. For example, 6X means six 1:10 steps; it is not the same dilution as 6C. LM or Q refers to another scale used in some homeopathic practice. Do not substitute one label for another based only on the number.
Combination products may list several ingredients at different dilutions. Read the entire active-ingredient panel, dosage form and alcohol or sugar content rather than focusing on one notation.
Does a higher number work better?
No reliable rule says that a higher homeopathic potency produces a better health outcome. The US FDA notes that homeopathic products marketed there have not been reviewed or approved for safety and effectiveness. Reviews of homeopathy have not established robust efficacy for treating serious conditions beyond placebo effects.
People may still value the reflective conversation, personal narrative or ritual of a consultation. Those experiences should not be presented as proof that an ultra-dilute product treats disease. Read homeopathy versus herbal medicine to understand why a homeopathic potency is different from a measurable botanical extract.
Safety still matters
โHighly dilutedโ does not justify ignoring quality. Regulators have identified products with measurable active ingredients, incorrect dilution or contamination. Low-dilution products can contain more starting material than a 30C or 200C product. Liquid drops may also contain alcohol, and tablets may contain lactose or other excipients.
The larger risk can be delaying effective assessment or treatment. New, severe, persistent or worsening symptoms need appropriate care. Do not stop prescribed medicine because a complementary product has been recommended.
Choosing a practitioner in South Africa
Homeopathy is an allied health profession in South Africa. The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) lists a five-year full-time masterโs degree as the current qualification route and maintains professional registration requirements.
Before booking, verify the practitionerโs registration, scope and willingness to coordinate with your medical team. A good consultation should include red-flag screening, medicine review, informed consent and clear referral when symptoms fall outside complementary care. Frequently asked questions
Is 200C stronger than 30C?
In homeopathic terminology it is called a higher potency; chemically, it is more dilute. โStrongerโ is therefore misleading unless the speaker explains which meaning they intend.
Are 6C and 6X the same?
No. C uses repeated 1:100 steps; X or D uses repeated 1:10 steps.
Can homeopathic products interact with medicines?
Very high dilutions are unlikely to cause conventional pharmacological interactions from the named starting substance, but low dilutions, combination products, alcohol and manufacturing errors can matter. The decision to replace or stop treatment creates a separate risk.
Can I choose a potency from an online symptom list?
A list cannot assess diagnosis, red flags or medicine interactions. For persistent or significant symptoms, use a qualified practitioner and appropriate medical care.
