Traditionally used by the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica such as the Mayans, Olmecs and Aztecs: this plant was deemed ‘food by the Gods’ and used to strengthen the body, heart and mind. Highly regarded, it was consumed regularly before going on expeditions and ceremonially, to bring about a deeper connection to oneself and the universe.
In its raw, pure form, is a ‘vasodilator’ – meaning it improves blood flow to the heart and brain, thus lowering blood pressure and warming the body. Considered a heart-opening medicine due to its properties, it also served as an aphrodisiac* and stamina-increasing food packed with flavonoids* and theobromine*.
It makes for an excellent replacement of your morning coffee as it is also a stimulant but not as hard hitting on the nervous system as caffeine, gently stimulating the bodily system without the jitters.

Descriptive terms (*)
Aphrodisiac – Substance that can increase sexual performance, desire, and pleasure.
Flavonoids – A group of natural substances with variable phenolic structures
Theobromine – A substance that is closely related to caffeine and is found in cocoa beans, cola nuts, and tea. Theobromine is used to increase the amount of urine made by the kidneys, to stimulate the heart, and to widen blood vessels.
To prepare
- Start with the cacao and chop with a knife into smaller pieces so it softens easily in hot water.
- Heat water slightly, without bringing it to a boiling point.
- Add the cacao shavings.
- Add sweetener of choice, coconut oil, milk and/or spices to taste.
- Use a whisk or blender to stir the brew until it’s all the chunks are blended, and you get a frothy top.
- It’s helpful to have a spoon or stirring stick to keep the consistency even as you consume. The cacao will settle at the bottom over time.
- Serve hot & enjoy!
Cacao on its own can be an acquired taste, although certainly some prefer it pure. However, its flavour and potency can be enhanced with vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg, honey, raw sugar (e.g., coconut), lucuma, maca powder, neurotropic such as chaga, lion’s mane or reishi mushroom, even adding a bit of coconut oil, nut butter or tahini for extra creaminess and/or dash of milk of choice.
