Traditionally used by the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica such as the Mayans, Olmecs and Aztecs: this plant was deemed ‘food by the Gods’ and used to strengthen the body, heart and mind. Highly regarded, it was consumed regularly before going on expeditions and ceremonially, to bring about a deeper connection to oneself and the universe.

Cacao, in its raw, pure form, is considered a ‘vasodilator’ meaning it improves blood flow to the heart and brain, thus lowering blood pressure and warming the body. Considered a heart-opening medicine due to its properties, it also served as an aphrodisiac and stamina-increasing food packed with flavonoids and theobromine.

It makes for an excellent replacement for caffeine in our daily lives, gently stimulating the bodily system without the jitters that accompany a double shot of espresso.

Cacao can also be used to deepen meditations and quiet contemplation, enhancing creativity and stillness of the mind.

When we drop into our hearts, it becomes easier to see our path and hear our inner voice. Cacao, lovingly called ‘Cacaocita’ by these cultures, can help us connect more deeply.

Our Cacao is ethically sourced from farms in Tanzania and prepared in an extensive, traditional way by picking the fruit, fermenting them to cultivate the flavor, then they are cracked to extract the seeds, stone-ground and roasted at a low temperature thus leaving its amazing antioxidant and beneficial compounds intact.

Directions for use:  Cacao taken in this way can be used to replace your morning coffee as it is also a stimulant but not as hard hitting on the nervous system as caffeine.

To prepare

  • Start with the cacao and chop with a knife into smaller pieces so it softens easily in hot water.
  • Heat water slightly, without bringing it to a boiling point.
  • Add the cacao shavings.
  • Add sweetener of choice, coconut oil, milk and/or spices to taste.
  • Use a whisk or blender to stir the brew until it’s all the chunks are blended, and you get a frothy top.
  • It’s helpful to have a spoon or stirring stick to keep the consistency even as you consume. The cacao will settle at the bottom over time.
  • Serve hot & enjoy!

This is a good dosage guideline:

10g – low, introductory dose

25g – recommended dose
